photoOn Monday night, the Board of Directors hosted our 41st AGM, celebrating 2013 with volunteers, staff and community partners. There was networking and refreshments, followed by Board Chair Richard Einarson opening the business of the Annual General Meeting.

A new Board of Directors was elected and we offered our thanks to retiring Board members Beatrice du Prey and Barbara Soles, both who volunteered with us for 6 years. Pam Krause, our President and CEO gave an overview of the year’s successes and a preview of the work ahead.

Pam shared some of the highlights of our work including the WiseGuyz program, the Training Centre, the GSA Network, and our Parent Night parties. They represent our innovative programming strategy focused on community impact. Pam thanked the Board of Directors and volunteers for their support. She gave a special thanks to the staff for the work they do every day, noting that it changes people’s lives.

After the AGM , Dawn Johnston, professor of Communications and Culture at University of Calgary and a CSHC board member, opened the presentation portion of the evening with a discussion encouraging us to think about how current media shapes our ideas about sex and sexuality. She offered us thoughts about challenging the offensive and limiting images of media, and talked about the consumption, production and participation of new media.

Becky van Tassel, Calgary Sexual Health’s Training Centre Coordinator, followed Dawn by talking about how to thoughtfully experience new media as a youth, or as an adult in the sexual landscape. She delivered messaging on how to navigate relationships, use of the ‘head-heart-body’ formula for decision-making, and the importance of removing shame from sex. Conversation, laughter and questions followed.
