Older adults in the 2SLGBTQ+ community experience the same social, emotional, and physical changes that their heterosexual and cisgender peers face. However, they also experience unique vulnerablities due to lifelong experiences of discrimination and violence.

As people age, it is assumed they will have family support systems in place. However, many older 2SLGBTQ+ adults may have few or no safe connections to their family of origin. They are also less likely to have children or grandchildren. Many people rely on chosen families that they have built, but those individuals are typically the same age and also require supports. These adults may also need advocates to navigate all of the social, health, wellness, housing and other supports they may need.

If you are supporting someone and trying to find 2SLGBTQ+ -friendly service providers, you can check with friends or local organizations that serve the 2SLGBTQ+ community. If a person isn’t sure whether a service provider is 2SLGBTQ+ friendly, here are some questions to ask:

  • Do you currently have clients who identify as part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community?

  • Do you serve individuals? Couples? Families? Groups?

  • How do your staff understand and address the needs of folks in 2SLGBTQ+ communities?

  • What sort of policies and practices does your organization have to ensure 2SLGBTQ+ community members are not discriminated against?
  • How long have you been in practice?
