We are deeply concerned about the introduction of Bill 9 and the Government of Alberta’s decision to invoke the notwithstanding clause to restrict the rights of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals.

Our organization believes that all individuals deserve access to information, resources and supports that empower them to build healthy bodies, healthy relationships and healthy communities. Bill 9 undermines these goals by limiting access to affirming supports and removing critical protections for 2SLGBTQ+ people. This legislation increases the risk of mental health harm, social isolation and violence for already vulnerable community members.

All people in Alberta deserve the right to live authentically; to access gender-affirming care if they choose; and to be safe, supported and included in their schools and communities. The Centre for Sexuality stands with 2SLGBTQ+ individuals and will continue to advocate for their rights.
